Is the estimate free?
Yes. If the project is a great distance from Folsom, we will use today’s technology of photos and email to arrive at an estimate.
What information do you need to provide an estimate?
For new construction and major remodels we need a copy of the 1st and 2nd floor plans from the set of blueprints.
For Staircase Updates, we need a photo or series of photos showing the entire staircase and areas of the railing. A quick rule of thumb is to show every baluster.
In all cases, a conversation will complete any other necessary information and/or measurements required. At this point, we should be able to create a close “ballpark” estimate.
Will you visit my home or job site for measurements?
Yes, generally there is a home visit prior to final pricing and material ordering.
Can you help me design my stair?
Yes. We can help with your stair design, but we do not do official drawings for plan check by building departments.
What comes first, the stair or the flooring?
In most cases, the staircase is completed prior to the flooring.
How much will it cost?
The largest project for us was $68,000, but most staircase projects for new construction are around 1-2% of the total home building cost. For homeowners updating their staircase, an iron baluster replacement may be under a $1000.
How long will it take?
Most projects are completed in 1 to 5 days.
How soon can you schedule our stair?
Lead-time for scheduling can vary, but we like to have 4 calendar weeks after decisions for the project have been made. Smaller jobs using in-house inventory may be scheduled only a few days ahead during the slower winter season.
Are all of your website photos your work?
Yes. We did not go out and grab online photos. The photos used on our website are all of the projects we installed.
Do you provide repair service for stairs?
When the schedule permits we can go out and do repairs. Families with small children will get preference because of the dangers that might be present with an unsafe stair system. Our normal service cost is $130 per hour per man plus mileage and materials with a minimum charge of $260.
Do you sell stair parts?
Yes. After buying stair parts for over 30 years, we can also supply stair parts of almost any type.
Do you work in areas other than Folsom?
Yes. We are a Stair Builder serving Sacramento, West Sacramento, Elk Grove, Davis, Roseville, Placer County, El Dorado County, South Lake Tahoe, Truckee, Placerville and other areas in Northern California. We have completed projects as far north as Crescent City, as far west as Petaluma, as far south as Visalia, and as far east as Reno.
What types of wood do you use?
We use the domestic wood species of Hickory, Oak (both red and white), Maple, Cherry, Poplar and Walnut. We use the exotic species of Brazilian Cherry (Jatoba) and Genuine Mahogany from South America and African Mahogany, Santos Mahogany, and Sepele from Africa.
Are you familiar with the building codes?
Yes. As a stair builder, we have an obligation to understand the general building codes. We can advise the homeowner or builder about the local building codes, but it is their responsibility to acquire any building permits necessary for the project.
Does your company care about the environment?
Yes. We believe in sustainable resources and are happy to report that many of our domestic forests are larger than they were 50 years ago.
Do you install flooring?
Yes. We are a licensed flooring contractor, but most of our flooring work is to install stair landings.
Do you provide spiral staircases?
Yes. We offer both metal (steel and aluminum) and wood spiral staircases.
I have my own stair parts. Will you install them for me?
This is possible. However, each situation would have to be reviewed. Please call to discuss your situation.
Do you stain or finish?
Most stair contractors do not, but Folsom Stair & Woodworks will stain and finish. We also offer a complete line of custom powder coating colors for your iron balusters.
Do you make staircases with materials other than wood?
Yes. We provide a complete line of powder coated iron balusters and newels. We also provide stainless steel, paintable steel, custom iron panels and welded iron railing systems for both interior and exterior uses.
